Work for the Khurda-Balangir rail link is going to start soon from
the Balangir side, said General Manager East Coast Railways (ECoR) Indra Ghosh
on Thursday.
While meeting a delegation of the
peoples’ representatives from Balangir district led by local MP Kalikesh
Narayan Singh Deo, Ghosh said work would soon start within a few months from
the Balangir-end to speed up the construction work of the much-awaited rail
link between western and coastal Odisha.
Ghosh assured the delegation that as
the estimate for starting work has already been sent to the authorities last
month, the work would begin once the estimate is approved. While work has
started from the Khurda Road side, there has been a demand to begin work from the
Balangir-end too so that completion of the project would be expedited.
After 18 years of approval of the
project, hardly a few kilometres of link has been completed so far while the
project cost has escalated to more than `1,000 crore. Though a Computerised
Reservation Counter (CRC) at Patnagarh was sanctioned last year under the quota
of Balangir MP, till date it has not started working due to non-supply of
hardware.
The ECoR GM promised to look into
delay of the work on Titlagarh railway over-bridge so that work starts with
immediate effect. During the meeting, the demand for an RCC sleeper factory at
the Kantabanji railway station was reiterated. It was decided that the matter
would be recommended to the Indian Railway Board.
The authorities informed that work on
the Balangir-Nuapada railway line via Patnagarh would start soon after the
survey report.
