Peeved at the frequent disruption of low power voltage and water scarcity, residents of Balangir town on Monday had given a 72-hour ultimatum to the district administration, failing which, they warned that the administration would be held responsible for any steps they would resort to.
A meeting attended by representatives of the Citizens’ Committee, the Chamber of Commerce and other sections of people and media, denounced the apathy shown by the district administration towards the water and power crisis in the town.
“We condemn the apathy of the district administration towards the crucial problems of water shortage and power crisis. The meeting decided to give 72 hours to the administration to take steps to solve the problems, failing which the administration will be held responsible for any incident,” said advocate Pramod Mishra.
“The problems of electricity and water shortage have been arising with the onset of summer season each year. There should be a permanent solution to the problems,” said Samajwadi Party’s Balangir district unit president Arun Mishra.

Demanding repair of village pond and an end to their water woes, several residents of Beherapali village under Balangir Municipality demonstrated before the District Collectorate and staged a Rasta Roko for some hours on Saturday.
“We want to draw the attention of the district administration to the water crisis we have been facing in summer over the last three years. We have intimated the officials in the local administration about the problem several times but in vain. We demand immediate repair of the embankment and renovation of our village pond,” said Subashini Suna, a resident of the village.
The women members are facing a lot of troubles as they have to go to far-off places to take bath and fetch water, Suna said further.
“Every year in July, some repair works start. The apathy of the municipality officials towards our problem is really unfortunate,” the villagers rued.
“I have received the complaint of the villagers. Water would be supplied through tankers to them,” assured Deputy Collector PK Nayak.

Demanding arrest of the main accused in the case of rape of a minor girl, Tuksi (name changed), of Kumbhari on February 28 and seeking action against the police officials who are harassing the victim and her mother, several villagers from Kumbhari, led by president of Balangir Zilla Adivasi Kalyan Sangh Braja Kishore Singhbhoi, gheraoed the office of the District Superintendent of Police here on Thursday.
Singhbhoi alleged that the officials of the Tikrapada police outpost did not accept their complaint. Even the victim was not sent for medical examination. On approaching the SP, the case was handed over to IIC of the Saintala police station for investigation.
But, he alleged, the investigation by the Saintala PS IIC did not provide any justice to the victim. The harassed victim then filed a complaint in the Chief Minister’s Grievance Cell, which directed the SP to take appropriate action.
Getting the directive from the CM’s Grievance Cell, SP R Prakash assigned the case to DSP Niranjan Mishra for investigation and submission of a report. Meanwhile, the DSP has submitted his inquiry report to the CM’s office.
“As the accused in the rape case is moving freely, we gheraoed the SP’s office demanding his arrest and action against the officer-in-charge of Tikrapada police outpost and the Inspector-in-Charge of the Saintala police station today,” said Singhbhoi.
“Unless the accused is arrested within seven days, we will sit on dharna before the SP’s office here,” he threatened.

Demanding action against doctor Annantaram Meher for his alleged carelessness and negligence resulting in the death of one Dilip Gochhayat at the district hospital here on Friday, several residents of the town held a road blockade before the District Collectorate here with Gochhayat’s body on the road.
Gochhayat, who was returning to Balangir on Thursday, had met with an accident when a dumper dashed against him. He was admitted to the District Headquarters Hospital. However, allegedly Dr Meher only told Gochhayat’s relatives not to be worried and told them to meet him on Friday.
By this time, Gochhayat also complained of severe pain in his body, which was also not taken care at the hospital, and as a result, he died, alleged an agitator, Soumyakanta Panda.
“We believe all this happened due to the negligence of Dr Meher, and we demand action against him,” said Panda.
However, ADMO BK Dora told mediapersons, “Earlier, we had not received any complaints against Dr Meher. This matter will be investigated and necessary action will be taken against the doctor after inquiry.”

Chinese experts feel that there ismore to  India's successful long-range nuclear-capable missile Agni-V than what New Delhi is saying. A Chinese researcher said the missile "actually has the potential to reach targets 8,000 kilometers away".
Du Wenlong, a researcher at China's PLA Academy of Military Sciences, told the Global Times that the Agni-V "actually has the potential to reach targets 8,000 kilometers away".

Du added that "the Indian government had deliberately downplayed the missile's capability in order to avoid causing concern to other countries".

India on Thursday test-fired the Agni-V missile that it said can accurately hit targets more than 5,000 km away. With this launch, India entered an exclusive club of nations that have this capability.

Zhang Zhaozhong, a professor with the People's Liberation Army National Defense University, told the Global Times that according to China's standard, an ICBM should have a range of at least 8,000 km.

"The Agni-V's range could be further enhanced to become an Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile," he said.
