Incessant rains over the last three days due to low pressure have
affected agricultural operations here.
Paddy is the major
crop of the district and farmers prepare their lands prior to the onset
of monsoon. By Raja Sankarnti, a light rain usually occurs. After that farmers
usually plough the land and start dry seed broadcasting, which is locally called
Khardi Buna.
However, this year,
due to more rains than required, Khardi Buna has been affected as the soil has
gone muddy.
“If paddy seed is
sown in the condition the soil is in, it would not germinate properly,” a
farmer said. He informed that unsuitable soil condition has also delayed the
sowing of Gurjee, which usually takes place after Kharddi Buna.
“This year, we have
received more rainfall than we required by this time. There should be a little
dry spell now. Sowing of paddy seeds in standing water would be difficult.
While the uplands water is likely to recede within three to four days”, said an
agriculture official.
