The National Human Rights
Commission (NHRC) has asked the Kalahandi Collector and District Welfare
Officer (DWO) to submit a action taken report on the death of tribal girl
namely Ratani Majhi of Badderla village in Junagarh Ashram school in ThuaaMul
Rampur block due to snakebite on July 14 this year, within four weeks.
The commission passed the order while acting
on a petition filed by lawyer Sudhanshu Bhushan . He, in his petition alleged
that Ratani died due to snake bite as hostel authorities failed to provide safe
place for the inmates in the hostel which is run by SC/ST Welfare department.
According to reports, as the hostel
authorities don’t pay any heed to the cleanlinessof hostel campus, as well as
repair of toilet meant for girl student, the inmates were forced to attend
nature call outside.
As the deceased Ratani was attending natures
call outside the school in a bushy area, she became a victim of snakebite and
died. Meanwhile, father of the deceased is yet to get the ex-gratia mount of `1
lakh given by the Government as he is yet to open a bank account in the bank.
