RAINS CREATE CRACKS IN B’NGIR CHECK DAM 2,000 NEARBY
RESIDENTS TO BE AFFECTED
1
The incessant rain and flow of rain water have developed cracks
in a check dam constructed over Laxmi stream which flows through the Balangir
town.
A month ago, surging
rainwater had damaged a side of the dam but it had been plugged by putting sand
bags there. Once the wall is breached, it would affect about 2,000 residents of
three nearby localities. Further, if the dam becomes defunct, it would trigger
water shortage in the district headquarters town and aaffect a lot of people
who use the water on daily basis.
Meanwhile a civic body
official said that the maintenance of check dams and ponds inside the
municipality area had been handed over to the Minor Irrigation (MI) department.
“We are aware of the
problem and `10 lakh has been sanctioned for repair work. Once the rain stops,
the repair work would begin,” said MI department SDO MR Satpathy.
