Commission Secretary Anil Prarshar has urged the United Nations (UN) to declare
December 9 as Human Rights Defender Day to recognise the effort of human rights
defenders in defending victims of rights violation.
It would be pertinent to
mention here that the United Nation has declared December 10 to be observed as
International Day for Human Rights. The date is also known as the Human Rights
Day which is celebrated to protect and preserve rights of people across the
globe.
“Over the years
there have been violations of human rights on many times and those who fight
for protection of rights, known as human rights defenders, are facing a lot of
troubles. While raising voice for the protection and promotion of human rights
of fellow citizens, the rights defenders also sometimes become victims of
rights violations,” said Parasar in an informal chat with this correspondent.
To protect the human rights defenders, the NHRC has a dedicated telephone
number to take cognizance of issues relating to their rights violations.
The NHRC comes out with a
series of recommendations for implementation by the respective Governments at
Centre and State level. Moreover, in 2013 the NHRC had also written letters to
the States with an aim to sensitize various functionaries about the problems
being faced by NGOs and human rights defenders so as to treat them as partners,
said Parashar further. The NHRC treats human rights defender as equal partners
in its endeavour towards promotion and protection of human rights, he said.
