Despite
the increase in brain malaria cases in the district, the District Headquarters
Hospital (DHH) has no medicines to treat patients for last two months due to
lack of planning at all levels and a lopsided medicine procurement policy.
According to sources, the number of brain malaria cases has increased from
4,542 in 2013 to 7,493 in 2014. Even the State Government has not supplied the
chemically treated mosquito net to people of Balangir since 2009, and has not
taken indoor residual spray in 2014 due to paucity of funds resulting in
increase of malaria cases in the district.
Though
the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) has the power to purchase medicines
in emergency situation, nothing tangible has happened as yet. When contacted
CDMO Dr RN Tripathy said he would look into the matter. “I will look into the
matter and take necessary step to ensure availability of medicine soon,” said
the CDMO.
