Around five decades ago,
ponds played a crucial role in meeting the bathing and drinking water needs of
Balangir town and nearby villages. However, now some of these ponds have been
encroached or dumped with garbage while some have been blocked.
Earlier, ponds that were
damaged due to encroachments, choking of drainage and other problems, were
interlinked. Speaking on the revival of the interlinking system, Balangir MP
Kalikesh Singh Deo on Tuesday said that efforts are on to revive the
interlinking of 16 ponds of Balangir town.
“In 2013, we had given
proposals for development of 16 ponds of the town. A sum of Rs19 crore will be
spent for this. The detailed project report (DPR) of four ponds has been sent,”
informed the MP while addressing newsmen here after visiting the Maharani Sagar
pond.
He further added “For
renovation of the Maharni Sagar, a total budget of Rs2.5 crore has been
approved; and if further required, more funds would be arranged”.
Cleaning, improvement in
drainage system and construction of steps and bathing ghats would be undertaken
to make the ponds clean and usable for the public, he said, adding legal action
would be taken against illegal encroachment of ponds area.
