The Rajya Sabha member, AU Singh Deo,
has urged Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu to expedite the construction of
various railway projects, including Khordha-Balangir railway line, in western
Odisha and all projects connecting Puri ahead of Nabakalebar festival.
In a letter sent to the Union Minister on Monday, Singh Deo said
the construction work for the Khordha-Balangir railway project, which would connect
backward western region to coastal parts of Odisha, is moving at a slow pace
due to lack of funds.
Singh Deo informed the Minister that the Odisha Government has promised
to provide land in the project’s Daspalla-Balangir stretch (112-289 Km) free of
cost and share 50 per cent of construction cost for the segment. The work for
this project has only been started from the Khordha side. As there is demand,
the work should be started from the Balangir side too which would provide
employment to local people, pointed out Singh Deo.
Singh Deo also urged Prabhu to expedite Jeypore-Malkangiri and
Jaeypore-Nabarangpur projects as the State Government has agreed to provide
land bear parts of construction cost.
Besides these projects, Singh Deo also urged the Minister to expedite
projects like doubling of Delang-Sakhigopal-Puri, expansion of Puri and
Malatipatpur stations, construction of ROB near Malatipatpur, third line
between Bhubaneswar-Barang, doubling of Cuttack-Barang and Barang-Rajathgarh
rail line and complete them before March 2015 well before Nabakalebar festival
in Puri. Singh Deo mentioned that over 50 lakh people would throng the pilgrim
town.
