Human rights activist Dilip Kumar Das of
Kalahandi has submitted a petition with the National Human Rights Commission
(NHRC) seeking compensation for death of one Sudhir Gadtya, a student of class
VII of Kultapada School under Deogaon block in Balangir district months ago.
According to the petition submitted to the
NHRC, Sudhir died due to electrocution when he came in contact with live 33 KV
electric wires which were hanging low on March 22 last.
On the fateful day, the deceased child while
playing with his friends came in contact with high voltage live wires passing
over the school building and got severely injured. He was shifted to the
Balangir district headquarters hospital and then to the VSS Medical College and
Hospital, Burla. But when his condition further deteriorated, he was shifted to
the SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack. However, there he succumbed to
his injuries, pointed out the petitioner.
It is a sheer violation of the guideline
issued by the State Government to shift all the high voltage electric wires and
transformers from the school and Anganwadi premises. The villagers had already
lodged a complaint with the Wesco authorities on November 2, 2013 requesting
them to shift the wires from the school premises but in vain.
Das requested the Commission to take
cognizance of the matter, direct the State Government to pay interim
compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased, submit a report
in two weeks, direct an impartial inquiry into the matter and initiate criminal
cases against the erring officials.
