307 MIGRANT LABOURERS RESCUED IN
BALANGIR

As many as 307 migrant labourers, 103 men, 118 women and 86
children, were rescued from a garden at Kudebhatta village under Belapada block
on Wednesday.
They
were all kept hidden in a garden by some middlemen and were to be trafficked to
some place outside the State to work as migrant labourers, said sources.The
middlemen have, however, managed to flee the spot and no arrests have been
made, sources added. On December 17, Patnagarh police had rescued 51 migrant
labourers from Onrabad Chhak in the district. The rescued labourers hailing
from Paikamal area in Bargarh district included 13 women and 12 children.
On
December 22, the State Government had decided to identify and track migrant
workers at the gram panchayat (GP) level for their welfare and safety.In the
first stage registration of migrant workmen at the gram panchayat level, the
VLW (Panchayat Executive Officer) will have to maintain a register in a format
prescribed by the Labour and ESI department.In a letter to Collectors of
Balangir, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Koraput,
Nabarangpur, Rayagada and Khordha, Panchayati Raj Secretary DK Singh has said
details of the migrant workers and their families will have to be kept at the
gram panchayat level.
