The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has
asked the State School and Mass Education (SME) Secretary to submit an
action-taken report (ATR) on the issue of demand of `5,000 by a teacher from a
school student for damaging her vehicle in Balangir district.
According to reports, on September 17, a women
teacher of Pandrapita School in Balangir Sadar Block asked a Class VIII student
Somnath Pasayat to take out her scooter from the school veranda. While taking
out the scooter, Somnath lost his balance and damaged the vehicle.
Upon this, the teacher got infuriated and asked the
boy to pay `5,000 towards the repairment. Unable to pay the money, the student
did not come to school. After the puja vacation when Somnath came to school,
the teacher again demanded the money for repair. Again due to unable to pay the
amount, the student stopped coming to school.
Acting on a complaint lodged by Dr SubashMohaptra,
the NHRC issued a notice to the State Government to submit ATR within four
weeks.
Meanwhile in a related development, SME Additional
Secretary J Mohanty issued a notice to the District Magistrate of Balangir, the
District Education Officer and the Director, Secondary Education to submit an
ATR within seven days.
