TThe National Human
Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the School and Mass Education
Secretary asking for an action taken report (ATR) within four weeks over
corporal punishment to three girl students at Deogaon Nodal UP School in
Balangir. The commission has issued the notice on July 10.
According to petitioner Dilip Das three girl students, Nituna Sahu,
Babita Sahu and Girija Rana of Class-VI of Deogaon Nodal UP School, were forced
to made sit up 1000 times as they did not offered Namsakr to Bigyan Budek, a
teacher of the school on June 23 this year when he entered the school
premises.
“This action of the teacher violates provisions of Child Rights and
Right to Education Act 2010,” Das pointed out.
“The teacher ordered the girl student to take up1000 sit up, even as
corporal punishment is banned in School by the Government. After taking 1000
sit ups, the girls fell unconscious and became ill. The parent also lodged a
complaint with the School Headmistress to this effect,” said the petitioner.
