Tuesday, 09 April 2013 | SUDHIR MISHRA | BALANGIR | in Bhubaneswar

The measurement and alignment work for construction of spillway of the Lower Suktel Irrigation Project by the Odisha Construction Corporation (OCC) began on Monday with OCC officials carrying out the job at Pardhiapali, 25 km from here, even as members of Lower Suktel Budi Anchal Sangram Parishad staged protest against the project.
“We are carrying out the measurement, levelling and other works here for construction of the spillway and after these works are completed, machine would be used (for construction),” said OCC Senior Manager BK Sahu. “We are getting support from people of the concerned villages,” added Engineer, Dam Construction Trilochan Das.
Balangir MP Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo said, “Besides me and the local MLA, the Government is committed to implementation of the irrigation project. Once the project is completed, it will boost agriculture and economy of this area, besides addressing the growing drinking water needs of people.”
However, a member of the Budi Anchal Sangram Parishad, Gadtiya said, “We were surprised by this development. The Chief Secretary had assured us that whatever development would take place would be intimated to us. .But we were kept in the dark. As we came to know about this development late, only members of the core committee of the Parishad are staging a dharna here. The next course of action will be taken up after a meeting of the Parishad.”
The crucial meeting of the Parishad was likely to be held later in night to decide its future course of action.
Balangir Superintendent of Police Ravi Prakash told this correspondent, “We have made elaborate arrangements to tackle any law and order situation at the project site.”
