Reacting to the reported misleading remarks of the Block
Development Officer Agalpur about the death of farmer Pabitra Pradhan of
Saantika, who recently committed suicide, several villagers led by
president of Zilla Krushak Sangathan Arun Mishra gheraoed the Agalpur block
office in Balangir district on Tuesday.
“We submitted a memorandum demanding waving of loan of the
deceased farmer, immediate assistance to his family from the Red Cross,
compensation of ` 5 lakh and assistance under the NFBS scheme to the family and
an apology from the BDO for making the adverse statement on the suicide
incident,” said Mishra.
The BDO was not present at that time, and another official
received the memorandum. “We have given seven days’ time for fulfilment of the
demands, failing which the district Collectorate will be gheraoed,” Mishra
said.
On Monday, Balangir Sub-Collector Jyoti Ranjan Pradhan and
Deputy Director of Agriculture Manoranjan Mallick visited Saantika and inquired
into the farmer’s death.
Meanwhile, Agalpur BDO RB Mangaraj has lodged a complaint at the
Loisingha police station about the damage caused by people in the block office
on Tuesday. "After getting the complaint, the police have started inquiry
into the incident," said SDPO Narayan Naik.
