With the mass agitation against the dillydallying attitude of
the State Government in implementation of the Lower Suktel Irrigation Project
in Balangir district intensifying, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in a damage
control mode has decided to convene a high-level meeting to resolve the three
decade-old vexed issue.
As the 48-hour bandh call by the Lower Suktel Action Committee
(LSAC) comprising members of all parties and social organisations came out
successful and tension ran high following three of the fasting leaders being
admitted in hospital, Patnaik on Saturday reviewed the situation and find out
the roadblocks being faced in implementation of the much-needed project.
The Chief Minister favoured calling a high-level meeting to
bring a negotiated settlement on the issue. If required, delegations of the
LSAC and displaced villagers would be invited to the meeting, sources said,
adding that even the high-level official delegation would visit the district to
hear the grievances of the affected persons.
The meeting was attended, among others, by Balangir BJD MLA AU
Singh Deo, Balangir BJD MP Kalikesh Singh Deo, Chief Secretary BK Patnaik,
Water Resources Secretary Suresh Mohapatra and senior officers and engineers of
the department.
Meanwhile, the Balangir district Collector has been asked to
send a delegation of LSAC to Bhubneshwar for discussions with the Government to
help address their grievances. Collector Debraj Mishra, when contacted,
however, said, “I am yet to get any letter in this regard.”
AU Singh Deo urged the agitating people to end their stir and
facilitate commencement of work of the project.
