Members
of the Balangir Zilla Krushak Sangathan (BKS) led by BKS president Arun Mishra
took out a procession and staged a demonstration before the district
Collectorate here on Tuesday.
“Both
the State and Central Governments are neglecting farmers continuously, as a
result of which cultivation is no more remunerative and farmers are facing a
lot of hardships. Recently, there was a big farmers’ rally, and we submitted a
memorandum to the Government, but the Government has not fulfilled our demands.
We are holding this rally protesting against the irregularities in the Mandis
and exploitation of farmers,” said BKS president Arun Mishra.
“Besides,
we demand bonus of Rs300 per quintal of paddy,” he said, adding that in the
forthcoming days the BKS would intensify its agitation further if the demands
are not met.
“Farmers
have deposited their insurance premium at the Central Bank’s Tamiaan branch.
Although the Government has declared that there has been a crop loss of 90 per
cent in that area in 2011, the affected farmers have not received compensation.
We demand a thorough inquiry into the irregularities in payment of crop
insurance compensation to farmers,” said a farmer, Gopal Das.
Later,
BKS leaders submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the district
administration.
