Police on
Thursday claimed that they rescued as many as 78 migrant labourers from the
Loisingha railway station in Balangir district when they were going to Atabira
area in Bargarh district for labour work. The police also detained a
labour contractor, Lalit Karmee of Attabira, for allegedly taking the labourers
to the worksite.
According
to reports, the labourers were being taken from Kandajuri and Buromunda area of
Loisingha block in Balangir district and Dunguripali block of Sonepur
district. Balangir District Labour Officer MM Paikray and Loisingha police
team reached the spot and verified papers of the labourers. After verification,
the labourers were told to migrate only after registering themselves in their
respective panchyat offices through valid license holders. Later, the labourers
were left in their respective villages, informed an official.
Sources
said the labourers were not going outside the State, so the police or the
Labour officer could not call the labourers as Inter-State migrant
labourers. Notably, 384 migrant labourers had earlier been rescued in
three instances in Balangir district in December last. At least 307 migrant
labourers were rescued from a garden in Kudebhatta village under Belapada
block, of whom 103 were men, 118 women and 86 children.
In
another incident, at least 51 migrant labourers were rescued from Onrabad Chhak
in the sub-divisional town of Patnagarh in the district. The rescued labourers
from Paikamal in Bargarh district included 13 women and 12 children. Besides,
district administration officials had rescued 26 migrant labourers from
Lunahandi village under Belpara block in the district.
