Sital
Sasthi, the annual traditional festival of marriage ceremony of Lord Shiva and
Goddess Parvati, was celebrated for three days at several places here with pomp
and gaiety. After Lord Shiva arrived with his entourage for marriage, He was
given a traditional welcome, and after the wedding He returned to his abode
with His spouse Parvati along with His entourage.
The concluding
celebration witnessed many forms dance. The Bainaach (dance of eunuchs) drew
large crowds, especially youth who were hooked to the dance and busy capturing
the performances in their mobile cameras.
A Dash Avatar (the ten
incarnations of Lord Vishnu) dance was performed by the Kalakunja troupe from
Ganjam. The Ghumra Naach and traditional dances by tribals with swords was yet
another attraction. The Palace Line Puja Committee tried to spread the message
of plantation of tress and protection of ecology, but its move was overshadowed
by the dance performances on the same vehicle. This festival also heralds
cooling of the atmosphere as its title Sital Sasthi suggests. However, due to
earlier monsoon rains this year there already was a decline in temperature.
