Members
of the Balangir Action Committee led by its president Gopalji Pangrahi on
Wednesday staged a dharna before district Collectorate here demanding early
execution of ring road and bypass of NH-26 and NH-57 at Balangir town and early
payment of compensation to displaced villagers in the Lower Suktel Irrigation
Project.
The agitators forced
closure of the Collectorate while members of the youth wing of the Action
Committee led by Santosh Singh Deo also closed the Lower Suktel Project office.
Additional District
Magistrate, Balangir Sadhab Minz, who received the memorandum from the
agitators, informed that a revised estimate for the bypass and ring road has
been sent to the Central Government. He appealed to the agitators to withdraw
the strike and lift the closure of the Collectorate as common people would be
affected due to non-functioning of the office. The agitators, however, did not
respond to his request.
In an another interesting
development, several people gheraoed the Town police station for a while,
demanding early arrest of the culprits involved in the Raju Nag murder case.
However, denying that
people had gheraoed the police station, Balangir SDPO Narayan Nayak said,
“People had come to know the progress of the investigation into the Raju Nag
murder case. We are examining the incident from all angles, taking the incident
seriously.”
