The
simmering discontentment among the BJP workers and factionalism in the BJP
district unit have come to the fore after the new BJP State president and
Patnagarh MLA KV Singh Deo announced his new team to take on the BJD.
Just two months ago,
factionalism in Balangir unit of BJP surfaced with one group led by current
president Omprakash Joshi and the other by Prabhas Panigrahi, Raju Nayak and
Ajaya Das held separate rallies here on June 16 last during the BJP’s
nationwide Jail Bharo agitation.
As if that was not
enough, the BJP which is described as “party with discipline and difference”,
as many as many as 12 elected mandal presidents of Balangir district in a
petition to the party’s national president Rajnath Singh drew his attention to
the unconstitutional organisational set-up and requested him to intervene in
the matter.
“After the completion of
the three-tier panchayat polls, we were fully involved in party membership
drive for 2012 and 2014. We achieved an 80 per cent growth in
membership,” they told Singh.
After
completion of general membership drive, the drive for active members was taken
under the active guidance of district returning officers, Mandal returning
officer and their deputies. Polls were conducted to elect panchayat president
in rural area and president in urban areas. By October 16, 2012, the elections
of 12 mandals were completed. However, after the nomination of Singh Deo as State
unit chief, the new district president was nominated without consulting
grassroots leaders or mandal presidents, they complained, adding that the new
district president immediately changed the mandal presidents and nominated his
choice candidates without consulting anybody.“It is an internal matter of
the party and the party will look into it” said BJP state president KV
Singhdeo, when asked.
