In a
heartrending incident, five members of a family were killed and four others got
seriously injured in a clash between two tribal families over a land row in
Balangir district on Sunday.
The clash occurred between family members
of Ramel Thappa and Sankheswar Majhi at Thapapalli near here under Balangir
Sadar police station area. The deceased were identified as Ramel Thappa and his
four sons- Jagdish, Kapil, Purna and Madras.
The opponents used sticks and sharp
weapons, besides agriculture implements for killing the five, Balangir Sadar
IIC Pradeep Jena said and added that four persons belonging to Majhi family
were injured in the incident.
Balangir Sadar SDPO Narayan Nayak said four
persons — Sankheswar Majhi, his brother Sadashiv Majhi and two sons Biswanath
Majhi and Kandha Majhi were arrested before being referred to the hospital.
Five
women members of the family were also detained for interrogation, he said.
Thappa family had a long standing enmity with his neighbour Majhi family over
ownership and cultivation on a grazing land which ended up with the bloody
incident, sources said. The enmity came to the fore
when one Ekadasi Majhi of Majhi family was killed after being attacked by
Thappa family last year.
The
collective anger of Majhi family turned ugly when the Thappa family reached the
disputed land for cultivation. To take revenge of the previous animosity, the
Majhis attacked their rivals and subsequently killed them on the spot. The bodies were sent for autopsy. Senior police officials rushed
to the spot and a probe was in progress, IIC Jena said.
