After
the Naveen Patnaik-led Biju Janata Dal (BJD) collected of signatures of one
crore people demanding Special Category State (SCS) status to Odisha and held
its Swabhiman rally in New Delhi last month, now comes the move of the western
Odisha-based Kosal Kranti Dal also to collect one crore signatures rejecting
SCS tag to Odisha and demanding separate a separate State of Kosal.
“The Kosal Kranti Dal
(KKD) will launch its campaign for collection of one crore signatures from the
‘Kosalanchal’ from July 15 and complete it by September 30. The signatures will
be presented to the President of India in October. For this, we are going to
orient our cadres, youth leaders and district-level office-bearers.”
This was announced by KKD
leader Pramod Mishra at a Press conference here on Sunday. “If the BJD
submitted one crore signature then out of the four-crore population of Odisha,
we will collect and submit signatures of one crore out of the 2.5 crore people
of this region,” Mishra asserted.
He alleged that
successive Governments have plundered the western region’s land, forests and
mineral resources in the name of development. The Government has taken revenue of
around Rs 27,000 crore from this region in last 12 years whereas it has only
given Rs 837crore to the region for its development through the Western Odisha
Development Council (WODC), Mishra pointed out.
He said the Government is
“showcasing” the poverty of this region, and once Odisha gets Special Category
State status the whole benefit is likely to go to the people of the coastal
areas leaving this region to suffer poverty and backwardness further. “We
reject the demand for Special Category State status to Odisha. We demand a
separate Kosal State,” he reiterated.
