Demanding action against the corrupt officials involved in the
construction of the Kandhen streamlet check dam in Jarasingha village, social
activist Gopanbdandh Chhatria, along with family members, has been sitting on a
fast unto death at the district Collectorate since May 8.
“For last four years, I have been raising the issue of
corruption in the check dam construction and demanding action against the venal
officials but to no avail. Rather, I have had to face harassment at the hand of
the district administration and police. I have been arrested and sent to jail
for staging a dharna and attempting self-immolation earlier. However, this time
I am determined to sit on the indefinite fast till my demands are fulfilled,”
said Gopabandhu, who also demanded construction of a new check dam in Kandhen
streamlet, adequate compensation for construction of the dam in private land
and to the farmers who suffered a lot due to faulty construction of the dam
earlier.
“I have written to the vigilance for a detailed inquiry,”
District Collector SN Dey said.
