Information & Public Relations Minister Surjya Narayan Patro at a meeting held on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of Odia daily Aji Kali here on Sunday said that media, the fourth pillar of democracy, works as a watchdog for the society and keeps a tab on the other three pillars and it should be free from any kind of pressure.
He observed that more the number of media units, the better it is for the society. Patro said that while about 80 newspapers and periodicals are published in the State, except in the cases of 22 of them, the financial conditions of the rest are not good. He informed that the process of identification for the scribes has begun.
Industries Minister Raghunath Mohanty stressed on qualitative news in the media. Unless the media maintains the expected standard, how can it expose the deviations and irregularities of the other pillars, he posed.
Sadar MLA Jiban Pradip Dash, I&PR Director BP Mohanty, district Collector AB Ota, East Coast Railway Chief PRO RN Mohapatra and industrialist Rabindra Jena were among others who addressed the meeting, which was presided over by editor of the newspaper Bismay Mohanty.
