Several Pani Panchayat members of Gudvella block, who are facing
water shortage for their crop due to drying of the feeding rivers of the lift
irrigation (LI) points, met the District Collector here on Monday morning and
sought his help for solution of the problem.
There are 55 lift irrigation points in rivers Tel, Rahul
and Khadang of Gudvella block. However, since there is no water in the Rahul
and Khadang rivers, a total of 35 LI points have stopped functioning and paddy
crop in 700 hectares of land has been damaged, informed Dhubleshar Sahu, a
farmer of Gudvella block.
“We demand compensation of Rs 30,000 against per acre of
crop damage during the Kharif season, waiver of electricity arrears and
immediate repair of the defunct lift irrigation points,” said Sahu.
As water has dried up in the rivers, the water crisis has
loomed large. We demand construction of a barrage at Bahabandha and Gadgada on
the Khadag river to solve the water crisis, he opined.
Moreover, the proposal for 67LI points are pending with
both the State and the Central Governments, where as the two proposed mega Pani
Panchayat projects, one at Sandhisara and the other at Tentelkhunti, are yet to
be completed, he rued.
The members led by Ashok Dora, Dhubaleshwar Sahum and
Tikebata Nahak, among others, submitted a memorandum to District Collector SN
Dey for action and the latter, reportedly, assured them of intimating the
higher authorities for further action soon.
