Believe it or not! Out of the 21 Lok Sabha members from Odisha
elected in 2009, five were involved in alleged criminal cases with the highest
number of four from the State’s ruling BJD, including one with a serious
criminal case against him.
According to the data released by the National Election
Watch (NEW) here on Friday, this is in contrast with the 2004 Lok Sabha polls
when three MPs had serious criminal cases against them.
The MPs with declared criminal cases include the BJD’s
Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo of Balangir with two criminal and five other cases
under IPC, Tathagata Satpathy of Dhankanal with 15 criminal cases and 30 cases
under IPC, Yasbanta Narayan Lagauri of Keonjhar with one criminal case and
Nityananda Pradhan of Aska with one and Bhakata Charan Das (Congress) of
Kalahandi with four cases and six cases under IPC.
And six Odisha MPs are corepatis and all of them are of
the BJD. While Puri MP Pinaki Mishra’s assets are worth Rs 29.69 crore, that of
Baijayant Panda (Kendrapada) amounts to Rs 16.11 crore, Bhartruhari
Mahtab Rs 5.11crore and Kalikesh Singh Deo Rs 3.86 crore. While Nityananda
Pradhan has assets worth Rs 2.64 crore, Arjun Charan Sethi of Bhadrak owns
assets amounting to Rs 1.11 crore.
