Former Kantabanjhi MLA
Prasanna Pal, the last convict in the 1974 Parsuram Satpathy murder case, on
Friday surrendered before the Balangir District and Sessions Court. He is one
of the three living convicts in the murder case. Pal arrived at the court at
about 9.30 am and surrendered and was later remanded to the Balangir jail.
Earlier on June 10,
another convict Artatrana Singh Deo had surrendered before the court after the
Supreme Court on May 21 directed him and Pal to surrender before the local
court within four weeks. Prior to the surrender of the two convicts, police had
arrested 69-year- old Dhobei Podha. Out of the total nine convicts, six have
died since.
Satpathy, a young journalist
and upcoming politician, was crushed under a jeep near the Kalamandap field in
Balangir on November 29, 1974. A case was filed and the Balangir-Kalahandi
Sessions judge acquitted all nine accused in the murder case on June 30, 1980.
Not satisfied with the verdict, Parsuram's brother Hareram moved the Odisha
High Court for permission to appeal against the acquittal order. However, the
application was dismissed on January 12, 1982.
On December 2, 1983, the
Supreme Court took up Hareram's petition and directed the Odisha HC to hear the
appeal on merit and dispose of it in accordance with the law. Delivering its
verdict last month, the HC awarded rigorous life imprisonment to the nine
accused in the sensational murder case. However, only three of the convicts are
alive.
