The alleged child sale case in Balangir took a
new turn on Tuesday after the child’s parents divulged that they had handed
over their child to a relative for better care. Byasadeb Das of Talpali pada, a
rickshaw puller, had been admitted in DHH here for severe diabetics. When he
knew from doctors that he might lose his two legs due to severity of the
disease, he decided to hand over their newly-born (5-day-old) son to one of
their relatives, a childless widow working as Anganwsdi Worker in Chhattisgarh.
The distressed Das couple has now two
children, a girl staying with them and a boy with grandparents at Titilagarh.
This matter had come to the fore after a local child welfare member visited him
and intimated the matter to the local police station. “We are waiting for the
inquiry report from the District Welfare Officer to take action,” said Balangir
Town police station IIC Prasant Pattanaik. Meanwhile, some locals and political
parties have come forward to provide monetary assistance to Das, who was
shifted to the VSS Medical College Hospital on Tuesday.
