Hundreds of university employees went on
one-day casual leave throughout the country at the call of the All India
University Employees Confederation (AIUEC) on Thursday, said
AIUEC president and former MP Bhabani Shankar Hota.
The AIUEC has been demanding UGC pay-scale
and setting up of a pay review committee.
While welcoming the decision of the Union Government to set up the 7th Pay
Commission for CentralGovernment employees that
would ultimately be relevant for State Governments’ employees, Hota said there
is no logic in denying UGC pay-scale to the nonteaching employees.
The university non-teaching employees form
the backbone of university administration as has been admitted by the Union
Government and the University Grants Commission.
While the pay-scales of teachers have been revised thrice
in the past, the nonteaching employees working under the same roof are denied
the benefits, Hota rued.
He criticised the West Bengal Government
for issuing instruction to the Vice-Chancellors of universities in the State to
take punitive action against the employees for ceasing work. “This is highly
undemocratic and dictatorial in nature and I urge the West Bengal Government to
withdraw the order forthwith. The AIUEC stands in support of the employees of
universities in West Bengal,” Hota said.
