Ignoring the
Western Odisha Bandh call given by lawyers of Sambalpur, life in Balangir town
went on as usual with shops and other business establishments remaining open
and buses plying.
On their part, the
lawyers of Balangir district are continuing their own agitation demanding
setting up of a permanent Bench of the Odisha High Court at Balangir.
Local advocate Bhavani
Satpathy said, “Since last 40 years, members of the Balangir district bar have
been demanding establishment of a High Court Bench at Balangir. Since August 23
this year, we have been continuing our agitation in support of our demand. We
are not supporting the Western Odisha Bandh call given by the Central Action
Committee. The lawyers of Balangir are carrying out their cease-work agitation
for setting up of a permanent High Court Bench here. And the next course of
agitation will be decided at a meeting scheduled to be held on September 21.”
Several other local
lawyers said that a High Court had been inaugurated here as far back as on
September 6, 1940 and it was functioning in the pre-Independence days.
