Even as the people of
Balangir and elsewhere are reeling under intense heat wave and facing the
ordeals of power cuts and irregular water supply, the villagers of Salebhata,
Raphakhal and Luhuramunda in Loisingha block in Balangir district have been
facing elephant menace, which has caused extensive damages to their paddy crops
and mango orchards.
According to reports, a
herd of elephants damaged the paddy crops of farmers of Salebhata and Raphakhal
and Luhuramunda in about 35 acres. The reports said that around 21elephants are
staying in nearby jungle and crossing the Gaikhai project to come to eat
paddy.
They have also caused
damages to mango orchard of Balgopal Mishra. According to sources, as food and
water availability for elephants inside the forest have dwindled rapidly, they
are coming out of their habitats to villages.
