The Crime Branch police on Wednesday arrested three Government officials who had, in connivance with two private companies, fraudulently effected transfer of 358.72 acres of land leased to the companies by 70 farmers of 11 villages under Patnagarh sub-division in 2005.
The arrested were identified as the then Tehsildar of Patnagarh Govind Prusty, the then Sub-Registrar Bikash Kujur and the then Revenue Inspector basudev Putel.
The trio was forwarded to court on the day, from where they were sent to judicial custody as their bail pleas were rejected. Crime branch sleuths had earlier arrested Agra-based Taj Gas company manager Debendra Tyagi and supervisor Ajaya Sharma, who were working in Patnagarh on behalf of the company since registration of farmers’ land in the company’s name.
The two accused, Debendra Tyagi (manager) and Ajaya Sharma (supervisor), were caught by a special team from Patnagarh a day after the officials began a probe into the scam. Both of them belong to Agra and they were working in Patnagarh on behalf of the company since registration of farmers’ land in the company’s name.
One Sushil Pradhan was also arrested in connection with cheating the peasants to benefit the firms.
In 2005, two Delhi and Agra-based private companies contacted farmers and wanted their lands on lease to set up enterprises such as an incense stick-making unit and dairy farming, from which they could benefit. The company allegedly got the farmers to visit the tehsil office to sign the documents and took over their land by making false promises.
Sources said without verifying what the company was up to, they signed on the dotted lines of the sale deeds. Some of the affected villages under Patnagarh are Jalpali, Ghumer, Ainlatunga and Ghunghutipali.
In May 2007, the then district Collector RS Gopalan and in October 2007 the then RDC, northern division, Madhusudan Padhi had conducted an inquiry that confirmed fraudulent transactions of land and pointed fingers at the then revenue inspector, tehsildar and sub-registrar of Patnagarh, where the lands were registered.
The Crime Branch had finally taken over the case following commotions over missing of a related file at the State Secretariat.
