The indefinite fast by members of
the Lower Suktel Action Committee here demanding implementation of the Lower
Suktel Irrigation Project entered the third day on Wednesday. As the condition
of a hunger-striker, Kahnu Mishra, worsened, he was shifted to hospital.
Meanwhile, the Balangir Citizens’
Committee has called a Balangir Bandh on Friday in support of the demand for
implementation of the project.
Action Committee president Gopalji
Panigrahi said that while no communication was received from the district
administration so far, some other organisations of Balangir have come forward
to support the agitation.
Balangir ADM Sadhab Minz, when
contacted by The Pioneer, however, said, “Yesterday I told the leaders of Lower
Suktel Action Committee that on 10th of September there will be a meeting (on
the issue) in Bhubaneswar.
The process of land acquisition (for
the project and payment of compensation is going on satisfactorily. The major
hurdle of acquiring private land for the project is going to be over soon as
its acquisition process is on. The spillway construction work is likely to take
place September 27.”
