Even
as eight days have elapsed since the announcement by Chief Minister Naveen
Patnaik to start spillway construction of the Lower Suktel Irrigation Project
from September 27 and hold talks with members of the Lower Suktel Action
Committee, the committee members continued their indefinite fast here for the
17th day on Wednesday demanding implementation of the project.
Not
a single high-level official has yet turned up here to hold discussion with the
agitators.
A
committee leader, Arun Mishra, said, “Until any official like the Secretary of
Water Resources Department or the Revenue Secretary or the RDC of Northern
Division comes and holds discussion with us within next 72 hours, the district
Collector’s office here will be paralysed and the government will be held
responsible for any such situation. This was decided at a meeting of the
committee on Tuesday evening.
The
meeting also decided not to oppose visit of local MLA AU Singh Deo to Balangir,
Mishra informed further.
On
the other hand, the Lower Suktel Dam Budi Anchal Sangram Parishad on Wednesday
reiterated its opposition to the irrigation project.
“We
have been opposing the project since the beginning, and we will oppose
construction of spillway of the project on September 27,” a Parishad leader,
Uday Singh Thakur.
The
Government should go in for construction of small dams to provide irrigation to
land which would cause almost no displacement of people, he said.
According
to reports, when an official tried to proclaim Section 4(1) of the Land
Acquisition Act to acquire land at Budhabahal and Banchhorpali villages, the
locals opposed the move, as a result of which the official had to return from
the area.
