Apart from the customary Rakhi tying, villagers of Karlabahali in
Saintala block on the Raksha Bandhan festival planted hundreds of saplings and
tied Rakhis to it, especially to the Arjun and Bahada species with a pledge to
protect them. They were joined by nearby girl students of a tribal school and a
college at Saintala.
“We planted saplings and tied Rakhi
out of love for the plants. We also pledged to protect them as they control air
pollution and provide us pure air, fruits, flowers, shade and water,” said
Krishna, a girl student.
Large scale plantation will help
preserve our ecology, said Sarpanch of Deng gram panchayat Santoshini Majhi.
“For last eight years, the Balangir
district forestry forum has been organising such programmes to sensitise the
villagers. This year, besides involving hundreds of villagers of various forest
protection committees in 23 villages, school and college students were
associated in the plantation drive. The students tied Rakhi to the newly
planted saplings with a promise to protect them much like a bother protects his
sister,” said Kulamani Sahu of the forum.
It would be pertinent to mention here
that villagers of Karlabahali have protected their forest of 750 acres for many
years. Before the plantation programme, they held a meeting with support from
Balangir district forestry forum and Regional Centre for Development and
Cooperation (RCDC). Sarpanch Majhi presided over it. Among others, Bhubneshwar
Takhur, Kirtan Meher, Doleshwar Barik and KC Darjee were present.
