Even as the whole nation celebrated the Independence Day with pomp and gaiety on Wednesday, people of several panchayats of Khaprokhol block in Balangir district did not observe the national day reportedly out of fear for the Maoists.
According to reports, the Independence Day was neither celebrated nor was the National Flag hoisted at Telen Pali, Tankapani, Rengali, Lathore, Karuaanjhar and Ghunsar panchayats. There were also reports about a handwritten poster of the Balangir-Bargarh-Mahasamund Divisional Committee of the CPI(Maoist) warning the people against observance of the Independence Day. Suspected Maoists pasted black flags before the panchayat offices and schools.
“People might have boycotted the Independence Day out of fear. We are inquiring into this,” Balangir SP R Prakash said.
