Social activist Gopabandhu Chhatria has threatened to go in for self-
immolation before the Collectorate on January 26 if the district
administration does not take action by January 25 against the corrupt
officials involved in the construction of the check-dam at Kandhen Jore
of Jarasingha village in Degoan block.
According to his petition submitted with the grievance cell of the
District Collector, a check-dam was constructed at Kandhen Jore in
between 2004-08 and around Rs 13 lakhs was spent on its construction.
As the authorities allegedly used sub-standard material and did not
follow the procedure, there is hardly any water stored in the check-
dam.
“Although a written complaint was submitted with the Deogaon BDO for
inquiry, no action has been taken against the officials involved there.
Moreover, as I pursued the case steadfastly, I was falsely implicated
in a case and sent to jail,” Chhatria alleged further.
According to the petition, two officials came to the village to enquire
into the allegation and reportedly took signature of ignorant villagers
in plain papers promising them IAY/OAP.
However, the information available through the Right to Information
(RTI) reveals that the people have worked under the NREGA and have
signatures over their job cards which is totally untrue, he claimed.
Ironically, there has been no prior land acquisition in the
construction of the check- dam nor adequate compensation has been paid,
he alleged further.
Unless the District Collector takes appropriate action against the
corrupt officials involved, Chhatria has threatened to commit self
immolation before the Collectorate on January 26. “It is an old case
and inquiry has been done at different levels,” said Project Director
DRDA Sanjaya Habwada when contacted by this correspondent over
telephone.
