The major Opposition parties, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress, here have voiced their demand for cancellation of the written examination for Junior Clerks, alleging “gross irregularities” in the written examination.
According to a memorandum submitted to the District Collector by BJP activists, led by Prabhas Panigrahi, on Wednesday, a total of 3,518 candidates had appeared for recruitment to the posts of 80 Junior Clerks in the district and the written test was held last year on May 18.
As there was a prolonged delay in announcement of the written test results, there was suspicion of malpractices and irregularities in the entire examination process. With reports of irregularities coming from many areas, the BJP delegation demanded scrapping of the examination and holding it once again.
Similarly, a delegation of the Congress, led by Bhagaban Bagarti, also demanded cancellation of the examination results alleging “gross irregularities” in the process.
According to reports, the rules for conducting the examinations were allegedly violated, providing benefits only to a few candidates.
“We are going to submit a memorandum to the District Collector urging him for an impartial inquiry into the issue,” said a candidate to The Pioneer.

The insurance companies operating here would be paralysed if the Government do not pay adequate compensation to farmers of Balangir district.
This was announced by Balangir Zilla Krushak Mahasangh president Sudhir Parischha while leading a dharna before the District Collectorate demanding adequate compensation to farmers besides other benefits, here on Wednesday.
Farmers of the district have paid around Rs 10 crore through different banks as insurance premium, but even today they have not been paid compensation, Parischha told the media at the dharna site.
The per-acre assistance announced by the Government is too low. It should be increased to Rs 20,000 from Rs 1,200, as declared by the Government, he said further.
All the farmers of this district should be brought under one umbrella, and the gaps between weather-based crop insurance scheme operating in eight blocks and other crop insurance schemes should be bridged with all farmers being brought under one scheme, the Mahasangh president said.
As this year crop has been lost due to drought, the affected farmers should be given seeds free of cost next year and fertiliser should be supplied at minimum rates, Parischha demanded further.
The Mahasangh activists burnt an effigy of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for his Government’s alleged anti-farmer attitude and submitted a memorandum to the Governor through the district administration.

Sashibhushan Saraf (45) of Gurund village in Muribahal block had migrated with his five children and wife to work in a brick kiln of Andhra Pradesh (AP) in January last by accepting an advance from a local sardar.
Sashibhushan owns 1.5 acre of land. Before migrating he suffered crop loss due to drought and found no job work at his village under NREGA. After working in Patiram brick kiln in Dundichell area in unhygienic conditions for a few days, his wife Baidehai Saraf fallen sick.

It is common to find a large number of people from western parts of Odisha migrating every year to brick kilns of Andhra Pradesh in search of livelihood, where they suffer torture, exploitation and other abuses. Even at times, instances of losing their lives are galore.
However, in a first-ever incident, about 5,000 migrant labourers from western Odisha have been on a strike in 100 brick kilns in Dundigal villages of Kutubllpur Mandal of Andhra Pradesh demanding minimum wage since March 19.
The workers are usually recruited for a paltry wage of Rs 180-200 for making 1,000 bricks, where as the statutory minimum wage in AP for brick making is between Rs 340 and Rs 367 per 1,000 bricks depending upon quality, said A Krishna and Sudhir Katiyar of Solidarity Committee for Brick Kiln Labourers in AP.
According to reports, the workers demanded minimum wage in a memorandum submitted to the Labour Commissioner on March 5. As nothing concrete was done, they went on strike from March 19 till date.
During the stir, the supporters of the brick kiln owners gheraoed the kilns and stopped the union members from coming out. However, they were rescued after police intervention. In Maladri, Ekteshwar and Narsimha kilns, workers were beaten by the owners, who also cut off electricity and drinking water supply to the workers’ shanties.
Meanwhile, the committee of the brick kiln workers met the District Collector and District Commissioner (Labour) seeking their intervention. Sources further said the District Collector ordered the Deputy Collector to enquire into the incident, besides taking steps to ensure that minimum wages were paid to the migrant labourers.
“Every year, a large numbers of migrant labourers are going to the brick kilns of Andhra Pradesh to work there. The Government of Odisha should intervene and take necessary steps to stop migrant workers from being tortured and exploited. Moreover, the Government should also take steps so that migrant labourers get minimum wages,” opined Biren Nayak of Action Aid.

Chaotic traffic in Balangir town has led to commuters’ nightmare. Such is the mess here that it is said if you can drive safely in Balangir, you are safe anywhere.
Here anybody can flout the traffic norms with impunity. Ride whichever side you choose, it is not a problem. But surly this has led to lawlessness on roads and accidents have shot up.
“We are dissuading the youths not to ride at break-neck speed. But in the absence of strict punishment, hardly does it yield the desired results,” said a traffic police on conditions of anonymity.
“We are working under the scorching sun with no cover over us. There is no outpost here. The traffic post is damaged. Even as we are working under harsh conditions and facing the consequences like dehydration and other health problems, there is no let-up,” rued a woman traffic constable.
We are taking action against the offenders. Besides, we are also sensitising the people about road safety, informed SK Panda of Balangir town police station.
New umbrella covers for the damaged traffic ones would be ready by the end of March, Balangir Superintendent of Police R Prakash said.
