Planting the Banayan and Pipal tree.

Today I planted the Banayan and Pipal trees on the outskirt of Bolangir town near forest.

Since lastseven years we used to worship both the plant by offering water after bathe.

As these plants had grown up in the meanwhile and it roots were coming out from the small pot,I decided to plant in a open field.

In this endeavour Sunil and Binod helped me a lot.

I have done this at my individual level.

Opponents and supporters of a separate Koshal State clashed violently at Sambalpur during a 12-hour Kosal Mahabandh observed by the Kosal State Coordination Committee on Friday.

The clash erupted when protestors detained the Sambalpur-Puri Intercity Express in the morning. Passengers and opponents of the bandh pushed the protestors out of the train tracks as they didn't listen to passengers' repeated request not to create inconvenience and let the train move. The protestors too retaliated in equal measure.

The incident took a violent turn when some aggrieved passengers burnt the banners of the protesters put up on the tacks.

Reports said while people in Kalahandi and Sambalpur opposed the bandh, schools, shops and business establishments remained closed in Jhasrsuguda. Both private and Government buses were off the road in Balangir. Committee activists picketed at different offices from the morning.

In Kantabanji, supporters too detained Rapiur-Kantabanji Passenger train for a few minutes.

Later a meeting was held before the Collectorate where speakers criticised the continuous neglect of this region by rulers of Odisha and opined that formation of a smaller State would ensure better growth and development of this area.

"We demand formation of a separate Kosal State underArticle 2and 3 of the Constitution. The only solution to the problems like regional imbalance, discrimination in education, employment, industrialisation and development is formation of a separate State. We will intensify the agitation if our demands are not fulfilled," committee Koshabadi leader Promod Mishra.

Meanwhile, Balangir SP Ashis Singh said there was no report of any untoward incidents from any part of the district.

Drought looks almost certain in Balangir district this year thanks to inadequate rainfall.

Everybody was expecting a normal monsoon rainfall this year and the prediction of the IMD had bolstered this. However, the expectation of farmers of the district was belied with the rains playing truant.

In the month of June, the district received only 81mm rains against the normal average rainfall of 202mm which delayed the agricultural operations.

However, the rainfall of July helped to start the agricultural operations in the district but still the rainfall was less by 32 per cent. Moreover, the rainfall was not equally distributed throughout the district.

Against the average rainfall of 360mm in the district in July, it received 244.7mm. Worse, in the month of August, the district has received 249 mm rainfall against the average of 333.6mm, a deficit by 26 per cent.

According to the Agriculture office sources, out of 14 blocks, 12 have been affected.

The worst affected blocks are Bongomunda, Titilagarh, Belpada, Tureikela and Muribahal blocks, besides other areas.

Agricultural operations like transplanting and beushoning have been held while according to an Agricultural Department report, agricultural operations have not been taken up in 28,500 hectares.

However, according to reports, cracks have appeared in the agricultural field due to absence of rains.

Unless there is good rainfall within next seven days throughout the district, we are heading for moisture stress condition, said Deputy Director of Agriculture Balangir Sridhar Das.

The State Government has decided to provide 50 per cent of the sale value of seized forest produce to the Vana Suraksha Samiti or any individual on whose information the forest produce would be detected. Earlier, 25 per cent of the sale value of such seized materials was given to informers.

Former MLA and noted environmentalist Bibhudhendra Pratap Das has hailed a notification issued in this regard by the Forests and Environment Department recently. Das had been requesting the Government to increase the reward money for informant for long.

As per the revised provision, whenever forest produces are disposed by any DFO, 50 per cent of the sale value would be deposited in a separate interest bearing account in any nationalised bank.

Earlier, 45 per cent of the deposited amount (25 per cent of sale value) was given to the forest staff, another 45 per cent to the informers and the rest 10 per cent was deposited in Forest Relief and Welfare Fund. Now as per the revised provision, informers would get 70 per cent of the deposited amount and forest staff would get 25 per cent while five per cent would be deposited in the Forest Relief and Welfare Fund. The fund is meant to be used for providing special reward in cases where forest staff and informers suffer severe injuries, major disabilities or death while dealing with forest offenders.

“As the reward money has been increased and the name of informers is kept secret, it is now expected that more people will come forward to inform about forest offence,” said Das.

Continuing its protest against the construction of barrages on the Mahanadi unilaterally by the Chhattisgarh Government, the women wing of the BJD organised a Kalas Yatra here on Wednesday.

The rally was led by Biju Mahila Janata Dal president Pramila Mallick in the presence of Minister Snehangini Chhuria, Titiligarh MLA Tukuni Sahu, party spokesperson Surjya Narayan Partro, Rajya Sabha member AU Singh Deo, Lok Sabha member Kalikesh Narayan Singh

Deo and Arkesh Singh Deo, among others.

The women activists performed a Shraddha ritual of Union Water Resources Minister UMA Bharti, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh and Union Minister of State of Water Resources Sanjiv Balyan by breaking water-filled earthen pots and burning their effigies.

“The Chhattisgarh Government has constructed barrages over river Mahandi against the interest of Odisha. It has violated an agreement signed between Odisha and Madhya Pradesh in 1962. The barrages will impact lives of people of entire Odisha,” said Kalikesh Singh Deo.

AU Singh Deo said both the erstwhile UPA Government and the present NDA Government have allowed Chhattisgarh to construct barrages and are now shedding crocodile tears for Odisha.

“This is a token protest. The Chhattisgarh Government is trying to check 85 per cent water flow in the Mahanadi by constructing barrages in a planned way. It has got support from the NDA Government at the Centre. We will take our protest to New Delhi,” said Patro.

In a new development, three adult elephants believed to have come from the Kantamal side of Boudh district by crossing river Tel since Friday night last and are moving near villages including Telpali and Makadchuan in Balangir and Deogaon blocks causing alarm among the villagers.

According to reports, these elephants are now near Narayanpur and Makadchhuan villages and likely to move to the Mathkai Reserve Forest.

“We are keeping a watch on their movement. We have collected footprints of the elephants,” said a forest official.

Balangir Forest Range officials in a letter to the Balangir Railway Station Manager have intimated about the movement of the elephants on the Balangir-Titilagarh railway track. Two elephants are moving in the Mathkhai Reserve Forest near village Salemapali adjacent to the railway track. Hence, necessary steps may be taken to avoid any wildlife mishap, said the letter.

Balangir: An injured python of around nine feet long was rescued from Bhutiarbahal village in Balangir district on Monday. Balangir Forest Range Office sources said the python had swallowed a small jackal at a local stone crusher unit. Local snake helpline members rescued the snake and the jackal was taken out from its stomach. The python was admitted at the Chief District Veterinary Office Hospital. At a divisional level consultative workshop held here for preparation of comprehensive wild life management plan, several proposals were given by the participants.

They include establishment of an unit of  Animal Disease Research Laboratory (ADRL), digging of more trenches near the forest fringe villages to reduces the incidence of animal coming in contact with human beings, immunisation of animals in the forest fringe villages, digging of more big size ponds/water bodies inside the forest for animals, hike in compensation amount, improvement in information collection from grass root village divisional level forest officials to tackle the problem  forest fire, destruction of forest and other illegal activities, incentives to Vana Surakshya Samiti (VSS) members and appointment of wildlife  caretaker, besides conservation and protection of forest , were  required to reduce the man animal conflict and to save wildlife and save forest for betterment of mankind.

Among others, the workshop was attended by the officials of railway, Wesco, Veterinary, Forest, OUAT students and wildlife experts. They shared their views on tackling wildlife problems in the district.

State coordinator of Wildlife Trust of India Ajaya Kumar Jena managed the discussion and took note of all the problems pointed out by officials in grass root level and facilitated the entire discussion. Circle coordinator Chandan Jani was present.

Earlier, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Bolangir Rashmi RanjanNayak made a detailed presentation on the forestry, wildlife and man animal conflict scenario in Bolangir district.

It would be pertinent to note that the total forest cover of Bolangir district is only 14.67 per cent. Thanks to less forest cover, loss of habitat, drying of drinking water source, electrocution, poaching, forest fire, wild animals are under threat.

Bolangir DFO RR Nayak appreciated the role of honorary wildlife warden Bolangir Sudhir Kumar Mishra in rescuing and providing treatment to injured animals and then releasing them to forest, along with other officials of Bolangir forest range, including the snake helpline members, in this effort.

More awareness generation on conservation of forest and wildlife animals at village level and effective involvement of VSS is required, the speakers opined.

ODISHA TO HAVE WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT PLAN NOW

The Wild Life Trust of India (WLTI) would prepare a comprehensive wildlife management plan for Odisha. It was disclosed in an inter sectoral meeting on wild life management held under the Chairmanship of Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi on Saturday here.

WLFI emiritus Dr MK Ranjitsinh and advisor Dr Binod Chandra Choudhury were present.

Chief Secretary Padhi advised to prepare the comprehensive plan balancing between forest and wildlife conservation on the one side and the mining and developmental activities on the other. Padhi advised to adopt appropriate technological solutions and innovative approaches to resolve the difference between wildlife conservation and developmental interventions. The meeting discussed about preparation of micro level plans for 51 wildlife and territorial divisions of Odisha.

Replying to a media query after the meeting, Forest and Environment Principal Secretary Suresh Chandra Mohapatra said the WLTI has been requested to prepare the comprehensive plan within 15 months. They would hold wide discussions with various stakeholders at different levels. The technical experts and field level executives will be consulted. Inputs would also be collected from local knowledge sources. Each department would nominate one nodal officer to give necessary data and input to WLTI for preparation of the plan.

Mohapatra added that the plan would be completed within 10 months.

The issues relating to diversity and conservation of mammalian, tigers, avian species, herpetofaunal species, fish, plants, aquatic life, marine resources, sacred groves etc were discussed in the meeting.

The topics like people’s participation on conservation, awareness about nature, wild life health, human and animal conflict management, eco-system restoration, habitat management etc also figured in the discussions.

Even though both the Central and State Governments make tall claims of providing jobs to poor people at their door steps and making wage payments timely to improve their livelihoods, an instance of discrepancy has come to the fore in Balangir district where MGNREGS workers have not received wages for the last two months.

The rainfall in July and August this year intensified agricultural operations and also provided impetus for plantation activities carried out by the Forest Department. However, the department faced an unexpected difficulty in getting labourers for plantation work.

“The labourers are being allured to work in the agriculture fields with offers of wages and feasts. We cannot offer that. We are finding it difficult to get labourers for plantation work,” said a forest official under anonymity condition.

He said situation has worsened for them to take up plantation work as daily wagers, who had worked under MGNREGS, have not been paid wages for the last two months in the district.

Sources said MGNREGA money has not been credited to the account of labourers since June 28. The district gets around Rs20 crore for different MGNREGA works.

A few days ago, district Collector Ashis Thakre has written a letter to Panchyati Raj Department Special Project Director requesting him look into the non-credit of payment matter.

Elephant population in India ,Asia and Africa has been threatened due to poaching ,loss of habitat and killing and illegal ivory trade.
Although India has a good number of elephants population, yet they have been killed by poachers. Their habitat has been destroyed due to deforestation, mining and other development activities.
Every year many elephants are killed /dying due to above mentioned reasons.
Time has come to save elephants from being further endangered and being killed.
Let us contribute one's best to generate awareness among masses about protection of elephants to save  their habitat and to save  them from poachers..
