B’NGIR REELS UNDER
ACUTE WATER CRISIS
Residents of Balangir town have been facing extreme water shortage
as the water bodies have gone dry.
There is no sign of rainfall as yet. Out of the 16 big ponds in
the town, not a single one now has water.
Karnagakata, one of the largest ponds, has also dried up. Once
upon a time, had earlier never gone dry and its crystal clear water was also
used for drinking purpose.Another large pond, Maharani Sagar, has also become
dry.
Due to erratic and inadequate rainfall last year, the groundwater
level in the town has gone down. So, the water levels in wells have fallen
drastically.Much to the surprise of residents, water has become a much
sought-after commodity.
