Agricultural operations in Balangir district are yet to start this year even though it is June 21, thanks to total absence of monsoon rainfall.
Last year, there was a severe drought in the district. Yet, the district had experienced a rainfall of 219 mm in June against an average rainfall of 202 mm.
This year, the district has received only 21mm rainfall where as the normal average rainfall is 202mm, a deficient of 90 per cent, informed an agriculture official.
Expecting a normal rainfall, paddy cultivation this year was targeted to be taken up in 1, 85,000 hectares. But the cultivation has not been taken up at all. Similarly, cotton crop was scheduled to be taken up in around 36,000 hectares. Cotton crop is a 150-day crop. The delay in sowing is directly co-related with production. The sowing of cotton seed should be over by June 30.With barely 10 days left for June 30, the fate of cotton crop in the absence of rain is looking bleak, he said.
In case of paddy neither sowing nor transplantation of paddy has taken place. Last year, erratic and inadequate rainfall had created water scarcity. This year absence of rainfall has further accentuated the water crisis in the town and village area. Wells have gone dry. Water level in in wells and ponds has gone down drastically. The  shortage of water has also affected plantation activities in the district.

B’NGIR REELS UNDER ACUTE WATER CRISIS
Tuesday, 21 June 2016 | PNS | Balangir | in Bhubaneswar
Residents of Balangir town have been facing extreme water shortage as the water bodies have gone dry.
There is no sign of rainfall as yet. Out of the 16 big ponds in the town, not a single one now has water.
Karnagakata, one of the largest ponds, has also dried up. Once upon a time, had earlier never gone dry and its crystal clear water was also used for drinking purpose.Another large pond, Maharani Sagar, has also become dry.
Due to erratic and inadequate rainfall last year, the groundwater level in the town has gone down. So, the water levels in wells have fallen drastically.Much to the surprise of residents, water has become a much sought-after commodity.

Coach indicators and an electronic display board on train timings would be installed at the Balangir railway station by January 2016.
Sambalpur DRM DK Singh, who visited the railway station on Saturday, said this while responding to a query of our correspondent. Notably, the Railways have already sanctioned for installation of coach indicators and a train display board here.
The entire station was cleaned up ahead of his visit.
A delegation of BJP Yuva Morcha activists led by Dinesh Sharma submitted a memorandum to the DRM demanding installation of these systems and other facilities at the railway station.
The DRM went around the station and asked the officials to take steps to keep chairs at proper places and ensure lighting and water supply facilities at the station.
It would be pertinent to mention that due to absence of coach indicators, commuters are getting confused during night hours to find out coaches within stipulated times.
This problem was first highlighted in The Pioneer and subsequently the systems were sanctioned by the Railways.
The authorities had also promised to install four CCTV cameras at the railway station.
Before the Railway Budget, Balangir MP Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo had also raised these demands.

About three weeks after they demolished the illegally constructed building of dreaded criminal Srikant Kumbar alias Timan at Larkipali, the Balanigir Municipality authorities on Tuesday started a demolition drive on three plots in the Shantipada area occupied by Khirodra Mishra, another key accused in the Government land grabbing and selling case.
“Yesterday, we had served a notice to Khirodra Mishra to vacate the Government plots, on which three buildings have been constructed, within 24 hours. Today, we carried out an eviction drive. Everything is going on smoothly with no opposition from any quarter,” said municipality Executive Officer Jayant Kumar Parida.
The demolition drive was started in the presence of a Magistrate and municipality officials. Three platoons of police force were deployed to avoid any untoward incident.
Khirodra, the main accused in Government land grabbing and selling case and an associate of arrested Timan, is still absconding.
Meanwhile an official of the Municipality has resented that no official from the district administration joined the meeting that decided to carry out the demolition drive on Khirodra’s three plots.

He reminded the Minister that the Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC) has planned to set up bus terminals in different districts, and Rs20 crore has been earmarked for the purpose. Five places, including Balangir, have been shortlisted.
The MP said Balangir is desperately in need of a new bus terminal. The Collector has identified suitable land for the same. Like airports, the bus stand should have a food plaza, good rest rooms, medicine shops and shopping arcade to provide adequate facilities for travelers.
Singh Deo said, “I am willing to earmark Rs20 lakh straight from the Rajya Sabha funds for the terminal”. He also requested the Minster to arrange lying of foundation stone for the bus terminal in July first week.

In a bizarre incident, some miscreants apparently set the Assisted Natural Regeneration (ANR) plantation on the outskirt of the town on Friday damaging the green cover. The fire caused damages to the ANR plantation, a rest-shed inside a nursery and a few plants. Forest officials immediately rushed to the spot and doused the flame.
On Thursday, sources said, forest officials had seized four bullock carts loaded with woods from nearby forest at BSNL Chowk. However, they failed to catch the people, who had bought the woods. Later, the forest officers had engaged a person to look after the bullocks. However, in the afternoon, a few people came and forcibly took away the bullocks.
A complaint has been lodged at the Balangir town police station in this regard. “We apprehend that the fire at the ANR plantation might have been done by miscreants of nearby villages. Whenever we detain a person for bringing woods from forests, we get phone calls from local people to release them,” said a forest official.
