IRATE MOB BURNS T’GARH SDPO OFFICE

Locals on Saturday ransacked and burnt the
office of the Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) in Titilagarh town of
Balangir district following death of a youth allegedly due to torture caused by
police.
The irate mob torched furniture, files and a police vehicle
along with two wheelers. Earlier in the day, some people attacked the
Titilagarh police station and damaged furniture, TV and office properties
protesting the death of a mobile shop owner Basant Pradhan due to alleged
police torture in the custody.
According to reports, Pradhan had been picked by the Balangir
police on June 10 in connection with a mobile theft case. The police had
allegedly kept him in custody for five days and brutally tortured him. When
Pradhan’s condition worsened, the police sent him to hospital. But he could not
be saved by the doctors of a hospital in Titilagarh and died on Saturday.
While no case was lodged against Pradhan yet the police tortured
him in its custody till June 15, alleged family members.Balangir SP and
Additional SP Sunil Joshi reached the town and are monitoring the
situation.Joshi said they would definitely take action against the police staff
if they found guilty. “The post mortem will be done by doctors from outside.
Besides, the persons against whom allegations are being made will be charged
under Section 302 of IPC,” he said.
