After
the recent deaths of two pahyderms in Agalpur block, report of a leopard being
killed by villagers in Titilagarh range of the district has stunned the
administration as well as animal lovers.
Sources said that a
two-year-old leopard had been giving sleepless nights to the villagers of
Pipurt under Belgaon panchyat of Titiligarh forest range by poaching on their
goats, calves etc.
Although the matter had
been reported to the Forest officials, no action had been taken, sources added.
According to reports, the
leopard attacked a goat and a calf on the outskirts of the village on Wednesday
morning. Seeing this, people who are working nearby fields raised an alarm. At
this fearing backlash the leopard attacked and injured two villagers, Murali
Majhi and Abhiram Gaditya. Angered over this, the villagers gheraoed the
leopard and killed it.

Divisional Forest Officer Abhiram Nayak said, “We are looking into the incident
and action will be taken against the guilty villagers as per the law of the
land.”
