A
transit camp of the Maoists was destroyed in a joint operation by the Special
Operation Group (SOG) jawans and CRPF personnel on Sunday in the Gandhamardarn
Reserve Forest area near Saapmund and Beherapani villages in Khaprakhol
block, Balangir Superintendent of Police R Prakash told mediapersons here on
Monday.
“As
the security forces approached the camp, the Maoists who were busy in some
activities there, opened fire, and in retaliation the police also returned
fire. After the exchange of fire, the Maoists moved to their camp at the top
(of the hill) and opened fire again, as a result of which an SOG jawan was
injured. The injured jawan has been shifted to the Burla hospital for further
treatment,” Prakash said.
The
police have seized some leaflets and some other materials used for shooting
practice from the Maoists’ first camp. “We believe that they belong to the
Maoist cadres of an outside State trying to recruit local cadres, but they will
not be successful in their endeavour as the local people are not supporting
them,” said Prakash further.
