The first-ever numismatic exhibition at the Balangir Bahi Haat (Book Fair) 2013 evoked a huge response much to the pleasant surprise of the organisers.
Member of Philately and Numismatic Society, Balangir Kamal Chakrabarty said, “We decided to hold the numismatic exhibition during the book fair as all categories of people starting from students to intellectuals visit the fair organised by the Balangir Zilla Lekhak Parishad. Today’s young generation is more engrossed in television and they are forgetting our rich ancient culture. To acquaint them with the rich culture and heritage and develop their interest in numismatic, we organised this exhibition.”
“We were collecting coins individually as our hobby. For promotion of numismatic and philately, we decided to educate the young mass and people in general about it. We displayed several coins staring from ancient times to the Moghul period to the British India to the post-Independence periods. One of the gold coins of the Moghul era, Asarapee, was also exhibited,” said another member of Philately and Numismatic Society Gangadhar Tripathy
Since the exhibition was at a public place, there was a risk. But the risk was taken to educate people, said Tripathy.
In the exhibition, silver coin of British India and Republic India, collected by Kamal Chakravarty, other coins of the British India period, besides ancient India silver punch mark coins collected by Gangadhar Tripathy, Moghul period coins by Bajranglal Agrawal, Republic India coins by Naresh Kumar Agrawal, Republic of India coins and foreign notes by DBS Murty and variousother coins collected by Dr Nabin Behera were displayed.
The book fair, which concluded on Monday, had been inaugurated by district Collector Debraj Mishra on January 8. The Lekhak Parishad has been organising the fair since 2006. This year, a total of 65 stalls were opened at the fair, popularly called Bahi Haat. Publishers from all over the State had opened their stalls, informed Lekhak Parishad president Sashi Purohit.
