As a mark of protest against the Government decision to construct three power projects downstream Mahandi, Sindhol-I, Sindhol-II and Sindhol-III, people of western Odiaha vented their anger by observing parallel Independence Day in different parts of the district.
In Sonepur, Lokmata Panigrahi of Kutranga village unfurled the National flag in a parallel Independence Day function organised by the Sindhol Prakalpa Birodhi organisation and narrated the woes of displacement. According to reports, similar parallel functions were also held at Birmaharjpur and Binika.
However in the official function, Minister Badri Narayan Patra unfurled the national flag in Sonepur which was practically boycotted by the people. The activists of Koshal Kranti Dal submitted a memorandum to southern division Revenue Divisional Commissioner LN Nayak in Boudh demanding scrapping of the proposed Sindhol power project, said All Kosal Students Union general secretary Dolamani Pradhan. In Balangir, Collector SN Dey unfurled the National flag and called upon the people to make India number one in the world. Although the Independence Day passed off peacefully, yet it was over shadowed by the incident of killing of BJD block president of Khaprakhol Kishore Panda on the previous evening possibly by Maoists at his village Sanatelenpali.
