Cong demands Balangir declared as drought-hit

Demanding that Balangir district be declared drought-affected and a CBI inquiry be ordered into the mining, dal and other scams and the Naveen Patnaik Government be dismissed, the Congress activists took out a procession and held a demonstration before the district Collectorate here on Tuesday.

Addressing the gathering, president of the District Congress Committee Bhagaban Bagarti criticised the State Government for its apathetic attitude towards the problems of the district.

He demanded that the entire district be declared as drought-hit.

The Congress activist submitted a 13-point charter of demands to the State's Governor through the district administration.

Besides a CBI inquiry into the various scams and dismissal of the Naveen Patnaik Government, the demands included immediate construction of the Lower Suktel irrigation project, establishment of the proposed medical college at Balangir, streamlining of the public distribution system, an inquiry into the irregularities in the IAP and action against the concerned officers, inclusion of Balangir sub-division in the weather-based crop insurance scheme and construction of bypass roads in Balangir, Patnagarh and Kantabanji towns for smooth traffic movement.
