Bolangir; Former congress MLA from Kantabanji Sri Santosh Singh Saluja was attacked today morning in village Chatuanka near Kantabanji along with one of his brothers and sustained injuries on legs and hand.

 According to reports, today morning Santosh Singh Saluja along with his brother AmarjitSingh and an advocate had gone to the village Chatuanka near Kantabanji to settle a land dispute there.

According to reports, as Saluja arrived there, suddenly around five persons who were hiding near the tree came out and attacked him with sharp weapon, when he tried to protect himself he sustained injuries on hand and legs. One of his brothers Amarjit Singh who sustained injuries on head and other parts was shifted to Raipur for further treatment

After the incident Sri Santosh SinghSaluja was brought to Bolangir district headquarter hospital for treatment.

His condition is stable and one of his arteries has been cut and after repair we would recommend to shift him to either Burla orCuttack for further treatment says Bolangir CDMO DrR.N.Tripathy.

Police have been detained five persons in this connection says Uma Shankar Dash SP Bargarh who is in charge of Bolangir district, to this correspondent over phone.

Nirakara Dharua, the farmer of Badtelenpali in the Lower Suktel project area of Balangir district, who received the Krishi Karman award from Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Rajasthan last week, was felicitated here by the district administration on Monday evening.

Among others, district Collector Muthu Kumar, DRDA PD Rajendra Pattnaik, Zilla Parishad President Bijaya  Pradhani and Vice-President Gopa Mahanada and Deputy Director Agriculture Manaranjan Mallick lauded the effort of Dharua and urged other farmers to emulate his achievement.

In the 2013 Kharif season, Dharuaa had cultivated MTU-1001 high-yielding variety and achieved a production of 115 quintals per hectare which was highest paddy production in the State per hectare. While the normal paddy yield of the district was 25.53 kg, Dharua, by using the System Rice Intensification (SRI) and the line transplanting method and bio-fertiliser, got production of 45 quintals per acre.

Dharua was given a cash prize of Rs10, 000 from ATMA, Balangir with a citation and shawl by Collector Muthu Kumar. Assistant Agriculture Officer Harekrushna Panda and VLW Jyotsna Chura were honoured for their motivation for guiding Dharua for adoption of scientific methods of cultivation.

Emu farming fast picking up in Balangir

It is common to find people, women members of SHGs and unemployed youths taking up several income-generating programmes like poultry farming, goatery, duck farming, etc to supplement their income and eke out a living.

However, farming of Emu, the Australian bird that too in backward Balangir district, which very often hits headlines for news of alleged starvation deaths and distress migration would be surprising for many.

Emu bird is mostly found in Australia and it belongs to the ostrich family which can walk at a speed of 40 km/h. It has been described as golden bird as all its parts starting from its meat, oil, fur to even its skin are in heavy demand.

The meat of Emu is in high demand as it is believed to be fat-free and its oil is considered to be highly effective in arthritis, rheumatism and other aliments. Its fat is purchased by medicine companies for preparing medicines. Almost all parts of the bird are in great demand as these are found useful in various ways.

I saw a feature on Emu birds on a TV channel and after searching a lot, I came in contact with an Emu farmer of Berhampur. I also visited several places in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu where Emu farming is prevalent, said Narendra Kumar Sahu. I started Emu farming in May 2009 at Bargaon, 10 km away from here and now there are 55 Emu birds in my farm. I bought them from Dindigul near Kanyakumari when they were five months old. Each bird cost me Rs 14,000, he said.

Prior to that, I also carried out soil tests and other examinations by a qualified medical staff. The Emu bird can survive in a minimum temperature of minus 10 degree Celsius and a maximum of 58 degree Celsius, informed Sahu. They are docile and live in a group. They are herbivorous and mainly eat leaves. I have requisitioned the service of a retired veterinary surgeon and another person besides caretakers to look after the birds, he said. The Emu bird starts laying eggs after two years and the number of laying of eggs also goes up, he said. I expect the Emu birds in my farm to give their eggs by September this year, said Sahu. Each bird is expected to give 15-20 eggs in the first year, he added.

Each egg of Emu fetches around Rs 1,800. As I have buy back agreement with the farm from where I purchase the chicks, I would not face any problem in selling or marketing, he explained. In Hyderabad, the meat of Emu is in high demand and there would not be a problem for me to sell its products in view of buy back agreement, he said further. However, the major constraint for Emu farming is the heavy investment it requires, he opined.

Former MP from Sambalpur Bhabani Shankar Hota has demanded introduction of a direct train to Allahabad from Sambalpur, Rajdhani Express from Bhubaneswar to New Delhi for three days a week via Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Angul, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Raigarh and Bilaspur, connection of Balangir with Raipur at Padampur and or at Nuapada from Luisingha via Gaisilet and early completion of the Khordha-Balangir railway line.

In a letter written to Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, Hota said introduction of direct train to Allahabad from Sambalpur would fulfill a long standing demand of people of western Odisha.

Moreover, the introduction of the Rajdhani Express from Bhubaneswar to New Delhi through western Odisha will not only benefit the people of the State, but of Chhattisgarh. Further, this will reduce travel length to New Delhi by 178 km, Hota said.

He also said Bargarh-Nuapada new line should be considered urgently as it would provide a third corridor to Raipur from Jharsuguda which is already saturated for smooth movement of both passenger and freight traffic. A driver training centre should be established at Sambalpur Railway Division keeping in view lack of adequate training centres under the East Coast Railways in view of increase in frequency and introduction of many new trains. The frequency of Sambalpur-Howrah train via Angul-Dhenkanal should be increased to at least five days a week, he said.

One train from Puri to Kurla (Mumbai) should run daily via Sambalpur, Bargarh, Balangir, Titilagarh and Raipur, Hota demanded.

The backward, poverty- hit Balangir district has emerged as a major solar power generating centre with as many as three solar power plants with a capacity of total 11MW already going functional.

Odisha’s first solar power plant came up in 2010 at Saidepali set up by Rajratna Energy Limited, Hyderabad and the solar power plant sells its power to the Gridco. After this, Aftaab Solar Power Private Limited set up another unit in the district which has been selling power to a NTPC Grid since 2012.

The third solar power plant of 5MW capacity has come up at Chingerbandh village in Patnagarh block. Moreover, yet another 25MW solar power plant is scheduled to come up at Murshundi village under Deogaon block.

Around 68,000 solar panels have been installed here which have been imported from Germany. The power panels have been designed in such a way that they give optimum production in a day when the temperature is 25 degree Celsius. Beyond this temperature, it affects the solar power panels and their production.

The major problem of the solar power plant is cloudy days. In a year, we are finding cloudy days from three to four months. Besides, disturbance in power grid is also a major problem, points out an official here, adding that the rainy days also affect power production.

Bolangir; Nirakara Dharua a farmer of BaadTelenPali ofKhuntpali GP in the Lower Suktel project area of Bolangir district  is going to receive the Krishi Karman award from PM Narendra Modi on 19th February at Surathgarh,Rajsthan for achieving highest paddy production in the state.

The Bureau of Statistic carries out survey of villages and paddy field with participation of Agriculture Department on random basis and carries out “yield estimation crop cutting”.In 2013, they undertook the yield estimation crop cutting in the field of Nirakar Dharuaa in BadTelenPali,says an agriculture official.

In Kharif2013,Nirakar Dharuaa of BaadtelenPali  had cultivated MTU-1001High yielding variety and achieved a production of 115quintal per Hectare. While the normal paddy yield of the district is 25.53kg, NirakarDharua by using SystemRice Intensification (SRI), line transplanting method and using bio-fertiliser, got a production of 45quitnals per Acre.

The police here arrested two persons, identified as DharmendraThakur and Sujit Agrawal of Patnagarh, in connection with the MGNREGS fraud payment in the district. A total of Rs4.97 lakh was shifted to other accounts by hacking the username and password of the Horticulture and Forest departments and obtaining a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) from the NIC.

Giving details of the incident to mediapersons in a Press meet on Wednesday morning, Additional SP B Jugalkishore said, “Dharmendra Thakur who was earlier working as computer operator in Belpada block was handling the MGNREGS payment of the block and was adept in online fund transfer..

He had collected the user names and passwords of various departments and after that he opened 11 accounts by using fake voter ID and photographs in the SBI Patnagarh through Kiosks Banking. After accessing the official sites by using the user name and password, he uploaded the names of the fake account holders in the MGNREGS website to appear genuine, says Jugalkishore.

Then he proceeded to NIC Bhubneshwar with a letter in the name of Jagabandhu Sahu, as executive officer of Tendapadar panchayat under Patnagarh where in the signature of the BDO was forged. He obtained the DSC thus.After obtaining the DSC, Thakur accessed the site, deleted the DSC there and registered the DSC he obtained in the name of Jagbandhu Sahu. So when the DSC was used, he could transfer the fund easily, the SP said.

During the investigation, it was also leant that he had forged the signature of BDO Belpada and a payment of Rs 90,000 had been made to a computer firm toward the execution of MI project in Yuba panchyat of Belpada block and bills had also been submitted as genuine, Jugalkishore said.

A three-member cyber expert team from Bhubneshwar investigated the entire incident. Further investigation was on

Armed Maoists late on Sunday night torched two vehicles and one vibrator machine of a contractor engaged in road construction near Badakendu along Tureikala-Makhand road. No human casualty and injury was reported. Maoist posters were also seized from the spot. They warned the administration to facilitate drinking water and medical facility to the people of the area through the posters.

According to sources, around 40 armed Maoists raided the contractor’s camp near Makhand and torched three vehicles. Meanwhile, police rushed to the spot and started an inquiry while combing operation was intensified in the nearby areas.

Even though the Government thought it to be easier and more transparent, the introduction of online system for transfer of MGNREGS wage to workers’ bank account in Balangir district looks to be a futile effort with about Rs 4.79 lakh have allegedly been transferred to unknown and fake accounts.

Acting on an FIR, the Balangir Town police have started investigation by detaining two persons. The money fraudulently transferred through DSC (digital signature certificate) includes Rs 1,51,855 of the Forest Department and Rs 3,27,072 belonging to the Horticulture Department. The transfers have been made at the SBI, Patnagarh branch.

Notably, the Government has introduced the Electronic Fund Management System (EFMS) through which the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) fund will be kept in the central account of the State Government. The DSCs are issued in the name of two officials, namely account officer and drawing and disbursal officer, for transfer of any kind of expenditure relating to MGNREGS.

Hence, DSCs of the two officials are required for money transfer. “In MGNREGA website, we found names of some unknown persons against whom payment was released in last October. We immediately reported the matter to the Project Director, District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), Balangir who inquired into the matter. All these transactions have been made at the SBI, Patnagarh branch,” said Deputy Director of Horticulture, Balangir, Ranjan Das Mahapatra,

A few months ago in Belpada block, Rs 3 lakh of MGNREGS fund was found to be misappropriated. An inquiry was done and the Computer Programmer (CP) was disengaged from job after being found guilty.   “Two persons have been detained in this connection and we are inquiring into the case,” said ASP Jugal Kishore to our correspondent.

Bolangir, Feb 1: After the outbreak of jaundice in Daspur village, reports have emerged of outbreak of the disease in Patnagarh NAC and nearby areas.
So far, 63 cases of jaundice have been detected and the situation is said to be under control. “We believe that the main reason for jaundice outbreak in Patnagarh area is consumption of contaminated water from Hirabandh (pond), due to which adjacent wards were affected.

Jaundice is a viral disease and the incubation period of the virus is 45-90 days. We believe that the first case of jaundice in Patnagarh area was of a person who had been to Sambalpur,” CDMO Bolangir Dr RN Tripathy said.

Jaundice caused due to Hepatitis E virus claimed many lives in Sambalpur recently. “In Patnagarh, both the Hepatitis A and E viruses have been detected. Both varieties spread through contaminated water,” Tripathy said. “We advise people to drink water after boiling for 15 minutes, and avoid open defecation. Once in the grip of jaundice, we advise people to take rest and take glucose water,” he said.

Although cleaning of Hirabandh and other areas is going on, water supply of Patnagarh town needs thorough overhauling. Water samples from Patnagarh have been collected and sent to Bhubaneswar for examination.
