TRIBALS DEFY BAN, KILL ANIMALS AT SULI
The district
administration had clamped Section 144 of CrPC at Badkhala, Sankhala and
Nuankhala areas in Khairguda and Kumuria villages to prevent people from animal
sacrifice and deployed four platoons of force to maintain law and order. But
all this proved vain, as defying everything the tribals went on a killing spree
at the altar of their presiding deity during the Sulia Yatra on Tuesday.
According to reports, as
the festival began, the tribals armed with their traditional weapons came to
the seat of their presiding deities, determined to slaughter animals and birds.
It triggered a mild tension as the police prevented them to continue the
practice. The tribals began arguing with the police and forcibly killed
several animals and birds at Badkhala, Saankhal and other places. The police
merely acted as mute spectators not daring to meddle in the religious practice
of the tribals.
However, district
Collector M Muthukumar said the number of animals killed had come down this
year. SP R Prakash maintained that the police booked two cases pertaining to
the animal killing.
Notably, the district
administration had a meeting with the Sulia Yatra Committee members on Sunday
requesting them to refrain from animal sacrifice. It had also warned them of
stringent action if they violated the constitutional norms.
